2014 was a weak year for coffee in a country where per consumption of coffee is the highest in the world and the category is strongly promoted. Total coffee volume sales saw a decline of -1% in Finland. The country’s continuing sluggish economy hampered both on-trade and retail coffee sales as poor purchasing power forced consumers to compare prices and look for the best deals, thus also limiting value growth. However, Finns are not expected to give up of their strong habit of coffee drinking, but are more likely switch to cheaper products such as private label coffee. Thus, price continues to be the most crucial selling point for companies as well as a pivotal factor for consumers when choosing a coffee brand.
Competitive Landscape
Gustav Paulig Oy Ab, the biggest domestic coffee producer in Finland, continued its domination of retail value sales with 52% value share in 2014. Gustav Paulig Oy Ab benefits from its reputation as a domestic and trustworthy company, its long history in the country as well as its well-known coffee brands: Paulig Kulta Mokka and Paulig Presidentti are the two most popular brands among Finns and the majority continues to buy these brands out of habit. Kesko Oyj, a domestic private label operator ranked second with a 14% value share in 2014. The fast growth of private label coffee products was driven by the economic uncertainty which forced more consumers to switch to cheaper coffee brands. In addition, private label operators were able to renew their product selection according to the changing demand in consumer taste and preferences.
