La Merce Festival is held in honour of Mare du Due de la Merce, the Patron Saint of Barcelona.
The festival is a celebration of the end of the summer and the coming of cooler weather. The festival has been held in the city since 1902 and always attracts thousands of people who come to participate in the many diverse and different activities that are put on.
The streets are so full of people that the official tourist website of Barcelona advises visitors not to bother hiring a car and rather try out the public transport system if they intend to come on holiday during this week. The events include the correfoc – the fire run, for which it is advisable to take hats, glasses and protective clothing.
Communities in Barcelona all create their own devils that parade around the streets letting off bangers and sparklers as they go and showering the onlookers. Other events include human towers, the giants’ parade and many other entertaining spectacles throughout the week. Tourists looking for hotels in Barcelona are certain to find many quality rooms in the city centre very near the heart of the celebrations.
