Being a student athlete is not an easy feat author R.J. Rahman knows from experience; add final exams, keeping your grade point average up to an acceptable level, along with training for the Women's Final Four in basketball I am sure its an incredible task; then after getting through the Final Four and becomming one of the final two teams playing for the coveted number one spot in womans college basketball takes a lot of heart and effort.
Meanwhile while playing for the championship the majority of the African American female players were being called horrible names by talk radio show host Don Imus and other guest commentators that were on his talk radio show.
The African American female players were ridiculed because of their skin color and presumed hair texture; and to top it off after obtaining the number two spot in women's college basket ball, after bringing the title along with pride and honor to the Rutgers University campus as a team then having to turn around, as a team after an incredible season, and demand an apology from a talk show host named Don Imus for his satirical race based comments "Wow" I applaud you all.
I am so prowed of all the members of the 2007 Rutgers University Women's Basketball team coach included, for your courage and undaunted stance against the disrespectful comments made towards members of your team. It was your courage that inspiried me to write and publish the poetry that I had in journals about Black Hair, Heritage, and Culture. You all as a team not only stood up for yourselves you stood up for all Black women and Black people in America and throughout the world.
I dedicated Chapter six and the poem at the end of that chapter called Ancestral Hairstyles to all of the members of the 2007 Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team. I know that its August 2010, but it took me two years to complete this project and almost an entire year to edit, well I hope that you all approve.
