The festival, which means ‘ordaining of the beloved sons’ will be well-attended by members of the Shan community and the event will attract hundreds of people from all over to see one of the most delightful festivals in the north of Thailand.
Visitors can enjoy the street processions, which take place over three days and celebrate the ordaining of young boys into novice monks. The celebrations begin on 1 April 2011 and on the first day the boys, aged 7 – 14, will take part in a ceremony where they will have their hair shaved and be bathed in anointed waters.
During the second day a procession will fill the streets showcasing handmade floats and offerings to the temple. The festival will continue with a procession leading the young boys through the town on the third day where they will be lead to the temple for a formal ordination ceremony.
The streets will be filled with carnival spirit as the procession of ‘Look Kaew’ or ‘Jewelled Sons’ travel from Chong Kham to temples in Chang Klang in the heart of the city. Visitors will check into a hotel Mae Hong Son in the city centre.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "The occasion is one of the most fantastic festivals in Thailand and is sure to draw many into the city. Hotels in the city centre will book up quickly so visitors should book online".
