Muslims celebrate this holy day in recognition of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday who is believed to be the founder of Islam. The celebration takes place on the 12th day of Rabi al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar which falls on 15 February 2011.
It is believe that the prophet Muhammad replaced tribal loyalty with equality amongst the Muslim people. It is believed that Muhammad received a message from the angel Gabriel who told him to magnify the Lord. After this vision, Muhammad began to spread the word about Islam publically in the city of Mecca which is now considered the holiest city and one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
In the Republic of Maldives, large street processions and parties take place in mosques and homes which are decorated for the celebration. Charity and food is given to the poor and poetry about the life of Muhammad is recited by children.
As in all national holidays in the Maldives, red and green flags decorate the streets and are hoisted up on the tops of all public buildings. Cinemas exchange secular films for religious ones and the famous Qasida al-Burda is read aloud.
Travelers visiting the Maldives can stay in Maldives hotels and take part in the celebrations.
