The education charity and National Voluntary Youth Organisation WORLDwrite, with its volunteer centre in London has won three complementary awards allowing it to massively expand volunteering opportunities and the free documentary film training it provides. The charity has won grant support from the Home Office Active Communities fund for its Shoot It, Share It, Save It programme. The Shoot It component entails free documentary film training with a global edge for 16-25-year-olds, provides access to new media technologies including digital editing and involves production of an actual film for screening. The Save It project is a fundraising initiative to assist partner groups in schools in Ghana; and Share It is a computer refurbishment project designed to dent the digital divide by helping youth groups with few resources in London to get the PCs they need and also schools in the developing world. A further small grant from Abbey will allow the charity to purchase professional film equipment and help ensure volunteer-made films attain broadcast quality. Last but not least the charity has upped its own connectivity having won one of BT’s 800 community awards comprising a new top notch internet-ready PC.
Director Ceri Dingle commented today
"Accessing resources to popularise the need for serious development to make global equality possible, as our film facility is designed to do, is not easy. It is a breakthrough to find donors willing to support programmes which promote equality not pity and do justice to the aspirations of the burgeoning number of volunteers involved locally. New volunteers of all ages are already getting stuck in to our computer refurbishment programme. We now hope to find financial support to allow older volunteers to gain professional film training and to win the big sponsors to make documentaries which will seriously challenge the statuesque globally."
WORLDwrite’s next round of film training courses start on Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st April. Each course comprises one night a week for 20 weeks and absolute beginners are welcome. To apply would-be participants should email world.write@btconnect.com or phone 020 8985 5435. All applicants need is a commitment to making global equality more than a pipe dream and time to do something about it. The charity is also looking for volunteers interested in helping to develop the film facility, and film industry professionals willing to share their knowledge.
