DATELINE: PROVIDENCE, RI; BOSTON AND CARVER, MA... Does the thought of a
spit roasted turkey leg make your mouth water? This savory treat has long
been a staple of the menu at King Richard's Faire, but this year, for the
first time, ten lucky contestants will be chosen to eat their hearts out in
a Turkey Leg Eating Contest on Saturday, September 17 (rain date Sunday,
September 18).
While visions of turkey legs dance in their heads, potential contestants are
asked to jot down their thoughts about why they should be chosen to compete
in the King Richard's Faire Turkey Leg Eating Contest and email their entry
to: SDubin@PRWorkZone.com. Contestants must be age 18 or over, and entries
(not to exceed 150 words) received by noon on Saturday September 10 will be
judged on the basis of originality to determine the ten contest
participants.
Whoever can eat the most turkey legs in ten minutes will win four passes to
King Richard's Faire, and will be invited to accompany the King and his
royal court onto the Dais for the 5pm joust.
Don't forget, in the 16th century forks were not yet in use and eating was a
messy business. As Erasmus cautioned in his Treatise on Manners published in
1530: "Be careful not to be the first to put your hands in the dish. What
you cannot hold in your hands you must put on your plate. Also it is a great
breach of etiquette when your fingers are dirty and greasy, to bring them to
your mouth in order to lick them, or to clean them on your jacket. It would
be more decent to use the tablecloth."
