The 2011 Open Door Architecture festival will take place from 20th to 30th May and during these ten days visitors to the festival will be able to access historically important buildings that are not generally open to the public. For lovers of architecture this is a once-a-year opportunity to gain access to some of Istanbul’s most beautiful buildings.
One such building is the magnificent Ortaköy Mosque. Distinguished from the dozens of other mosques by its twin minarets, the 19-century mosque, built on the site of an earlier one, is situated on the banks of the Bosphorus.
As well as being able to see buildings of architectural importance such as the
Ortaköy Mosque, there will be a programme of events organised by the Arkitera Centre.
The Open Doors Festival attracts many international visitors during the ten days of the festival, and combined with the usual spring influx of tourists, accommodation will be much sought after.
While it may seem easier to view the many historical buildings in Istanbul by choosing a city centre hotel, there are some top class Istanbul Airport hotels to choose from and Istanbul’s Atarturk Airport is only 17 miles from the city centre, just 30 minutes by metro.
