The Vegetarian Society is inviting members of the public to nominate their favourite veggie-friendly local pub, the best vegetarian café and the top retailer of meat-free ready meals, for the prestigious Vegetarian Society Awards 2005.
The Society also wants to know which products people can’t believe aren’t suitable for vegetarians, when at first glance you could assume they are. Last year Nestlé Smarties received the dubious accolade of The Imperfect World Award, as they contain cochineal or E120, a food colouring made from crushed beetles.
Nestlé has yet to change the recipe of Smarties so the sweets still pose a hazard for veggie children (and adults) who might not be aware of what E120 is.
Visit www.vegsoc.org or phone 0161 925 2000 for a nomination form.
The full list of categories to be judged this year is as follows:
~Best vegetarian bistro or café
~Best provision for vegetarians in a pub or pub chain
~Best Retailer for vegetarian ready-meals
~Best Meat or Fish Substitute
~Best 100% vegetarian box of chocolates
~Best range for vegetarian soup
~Best entirely vegetarian, cruelty free body and skincare range
~Imperfect World Award

The Vegetarian Society Awards are an opportunity to celebrate vegetarianism and highlight those companies striving to improve the choice and range of vegetarian products and services enjoyed by the UK’s 3 million vegetarians - as well as the growing band of ‘meat reducers’ (around half the population) who tuck into vegetarian meals several times a week.
