UT LAUNCHES NEW EXECUTIVE DEGREE IN ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

The University of Texas today announced the Advanced Manufacturing Program (MSE AM) will be offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in conjunction with the Advanced Manufacturing Center. Upon completion of the program requirements (a total of 33 credit hours resulting from eight semester-long courses, 24 credits), a student is awarded a Master of Science in Engineering degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a concentration in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

"We, with our industry partners, have constructed a new and unique MS Degree Program that provides reliable and innovative tools for manufacturing companies," said Dr. J. Wesley Barnes, Faculty Director of the AM Program, at The University of Texas at Austin. "Manufacturing has changed significantly over the last decade, and our graduates will gain robust skills needed for the competitive global environment."

The Advanced Manufacturing Program boasts nationally recognized faculty and a curriculum that provides an advantage for intense global competition. The program enables students to gain an understanding of the modeling of manufacturing processes, statistics, supply chain management, physical modeling and design of manufacturing control systems, financial administration, quality assurance, data mining, and the legal aspects of engineering.

Enrollment applications are currently being accepted for the first session which will begin on August 22, 2008. The application deadline is July 1, 2008. Candidates should hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a related field and have a minimum of 18 months of industry experience. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in upper-division undergraduate and any graduate coursework.

"This Master’s Degree program was created to deal with the workforce needs of the advanced manufacturing industry," commented Cath Polito, Executive Director of the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education at The University of Texas at Austin. "This superior degree plan tackles critical topics within core courses and key electives to focus on the priorities of the industry."

Advanced Manufacturing Program Fees and Application Process
The Advanced Manufacturing Program fee is $36,000 ($18,000 per year). The amount covers the following items for an entire two-year program: tuition and fees, orientation, lab fees and services, summer seminar courses, and summer project course, textbooks, software and other course materials, master's report course, graduation, a supplemental on-line learning environment, and access to The University of Texas at Austin resources.
