The first race was held in 1987 and was won by General Motors car ‘The Sunraycer.’ This year 21 countries will be competing making up a total of 42 teams with India, Iran and Italy competing for the first time.
This international race crosses over 1,877 miles across the Australian outback. The terrain to be conquered by these dynamic cars is harsh and the race is as much an endurance test as a test of solar automotive design.
All teams have to be self-sufficient and there are seven checkpoints along the way to monitor the competitors and ensure safety. This year, for the first time, schools are also being urged to participate and have been invited to take part in the design of a sustainable solar powered car.
With so many competitors and their followers, visitors to the race are urged to take advantage of the various Adelaide City Centre hotels to ensure a convenient resting base for the race finale. Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and has an international airport as well as good transport links to the rest of Australia.
