Dresden Christmas Market is arguably one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany and many residents believe that it is in fact the country’s longest running market. This year the stalls will be opening up from 26th November and will continue to trade until Christmas Eve selling a variety of traditional Christmas gifts.
Specialties of the market are the locally produced crafts including wood carvings, toys and nutcrackers and the market is actually home to the world’s largest nutcracker. There will be plenty of places selling delicious traditionally made Christmas foods and a Dresden delicacy that people should look out for is the pepper cake. Known locally as pfefferkuchen it’s similar in taste to gingerbread but slightly stronger although room should also be left for the famous Christmas Stollen.
The 4th December will be a special day in Dresden as a collection of hundreds of chefs will be revealing the world’s largest stollen containing four tonnes of raisins, spices and nuts. Reaching up to 13 feet the giant fruitcake will be paraded around the town before being divided up for everyone to enjoy.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "The Christmas market attracts thousands of tourists each year and it’s without a doubt the busiest time in the city. For anyone planning on visiting during this time they’ll need to book Dresden City Centre hotels well in advance."
