The lines are clearly drawn in the Virginia statewide elections to be held Tuesday, November 8, to select a Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. President Bush has put his slipping prestige on the line by speaking for and campaigning with candidate Jerry Kilgore for Governor and the Republican team. And a rapidly-growing number of anti-Bush independents have joined with the regular Democrats to support candidate Tim Kaine for Governor and the Democratic team.
Kilgore's double-digit early lead has vanished, and the race is now viewed as a dead heat, with Kaine pulling away down the homestretch.
As expected, Virginia strongly supported Bush during the 2004 election. Therefore a Democratic victory over the Republican team, supported personally by Bush, would be a serious repudiation of Bush and his policies. Democrats expect that some Republicans will also vote Democratic in this election, to show their extreme disappointment with Bush and his failed administration, and that other Republicans will simply stay home and not vote.
