IGEL Technology, Europe’s leading manufacturer of thin clients, today gave its first ever public demonstration of Voice over IP telephony from a thin client device. Technicians from IGEL’s Research and Development team, based in Augsburg, Germany, have successfully deployed a VoIP solution on IGEL thin clients running the IGEL Embedded Flash Linux operating system. The demonstration can be seen on IGEL’s stand, A07 in Hall 3 at CeBIT from 10th to 16th March in Hannover.
The demonstration was developed to assess the viability of customer requests for a secure "all-in-one" voice and data terminal, with a low total cost of ownership. The solution being shown at CeBIT uses the KPhone SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) engine to initiate VoIP connections over the Internet. An Asterisk PBX switching system routes calls from the VoIP server to virtually any standards-based public telephone network.
"Secure thin clients with built-in VoIP are a fantastic concept, giving customers easy centralised management of voice and data, and a low total cost of ownership," said Dirk Dördelmann, Product Manager at IGEL Technology. "Originally, we built this demonstration to test a hunch, but we now believe that we are one of the first companies to have done this. This is the first step in offering VoIP functionality to our customers and in the future we will continue to develop our solution."
"Analyst research and our own client base shows that there is strong and growing interest in Voice over IP as a fully-fledged corporate solution," said Heiko Gloge, Managing Director at IGEL. "We believe that with the right technology choices, the right security, and the right price, there is great potential for VoIP Clever Clients in a wide range of organisations, from call centres to hospitals to retail banking."
IGEL Technology provides one of the widest ranges of Microsoft Windows and Linux-based thin clients available on the market today, including the recently launched Windows CE 5.0-based Compact and Elegance series. IGEL thin clients are highly customisable, and provide organisations with the maximum flexibility to implement low-cost Clever Client solutions in mixed computing environments. The company has products for multiple market segments, including retail, healthcare, financial services, customer care, automotive, government and education.
