The awards, run by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, aim to highlight particular organisations who are making huge leaps in promoting sustainable living. Nominations are made by the public, with the final decision lying with a panel of sustainable travel experts.

The project aims to protect and rehabilitate the area’s coral reefs and marine eco-systems, as well as helping to keep the local wildlife from becoming endangered. It is a fantastic experience for anybody with an interest in marine biology, sustainability or the environmental issues. Work takes place along the Andaman Sea coast and surrounding islands. Stays can be as brief 2 weeks, and could include beach clean-ups, reforestation and bio-workshops. When volunteers arrive, they are taken through an initial diving course, and, if passed, they will be allowed to participate fully in underwater activities. The area is famed for some of the best diving in the world, giving you an opportunity to observe the wide variety of marine life â€" including turtles, rays, reef sharks and tropical fish. Whilst you do not need any previous experience in this area, it is worth noting that the work can be physically demanding.

Projects Abroad like to ensure the happiness and comfort of their volunteers. Throughout this project, you will be supervised by professional dive masters during underwater work, and usually have 2 days off a week to explore the many attractions in surrounding areas. Meals are provided in the communal restaurant and volunteers stay in nearby bungalows equipped with electricity and hot water. The qualified, experienced staff can also help with unforeseen problems regarding visas, sickness and paperwork.
