The main growth driver of domestic tourism in Bulgaria in 2013 comprised self-arranged trips by younger travellers. According to the National Statistical Institute, 75% of all domestic travellers arrange their own trips. Younger travellers visit seaside resorts during summer and various skiing resorts in the mountains during winter. However, according to the same source, 89% of domestic leisure travellers in 2013 were older than 65 and were travelling mainly to visit their relatives in other towns.

Industry Prospects

Domestic tourism flows are expected to grow faster in 2013-2018 than in the review period. The number of trips made annually by the end of the forecast period is expected to reach 15,612,700, mainly fuelled by numerous domestic trips made by people in the oldest age group (over 65). Younger Bulgarians, on the other hand, are increasingly prone to travel abroad and especially to neighbouring travel destinations in Greece and Turkey, so are less likely to travel within Bulgaria over the forecast period. A major threat to further development of domestic tourism in Bulgaria is the lowering of prices in Greece following austerity policies over the review period, which has made Greek tourism much more attractive for Bulgarians and may jeopardise the performance of domestic tourism.
