The small engines used in a micro CHP system burn fuel cleanly, providing reliable power and emitting less greenhouse gases compared with the grid. One micro CHP unit claims to produce less CO and nitrous oxides than a single burner on a kitchen gas range. The heat produced is used to meet the water and space heating needs of a building or home. Moreover, it also reduces the load on the grid and reduces transmission and distribution losses. A micro CHP system can be designed to generate heat with electricity as a by-product or produce electricity with heat as a by-product.
