"Oman Telecommunications Report Q2 2015" Published

Despite the maturity of the market and its relatively small size, positive growth continues to be registered across all sectors of Oman's telecommunications market. The high mobile penetration rate proves no barrier to expansion of both the wireline voice and broadband markets (although we believe apparent growth dynamics in mobile are skewed by the retention of large numbers of inactive subscriptions). Omantel 's investment in VDSL upgrades and fibre serve to boost demand for advanced services, including pay-TV, and this bodes well for the emergence of a new player, Oman Broadband Company (OBC), over the next few years. The opportunities for growth are reflected in our revised forecasts for the mobile and wireline sectors, which have now been extended through to 2019.

Key Data

* MVNO-driven mobile subscription growth exceeded expectations in 2014. There were 6.194mn subscriptions at the end of 2014, a figure that will rise to 6.775mn by 2018.
* Wireline voice connections also grew strongly in 2014 and our forecasts have been raised in anticipation of there being 407,000 accesses by the end of 2019.
* Broadband connections will number 2.728mn by the end of 2019, in light of very strong take-up of mobile-based accesses in 2014.

Key Trends And Developments

Oman Broadband Company (OBC) will use fibre-optic cables connecting high-voltage pylons of Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) to deliver high-speed internet services to end-users. A pilot project was in Hamam Al Sunub in the Wilayat of Bausher, in January 2015.

Within the pilot, OBC extended fibre cables between the electricity transmission station, mobile base station and Omantel network at a distance of about 440 metres. The station provides 40Mbps internet, versus the 3Mbps typically availed over the Omantel network. The capabilities of the new solution will be refined over time and as OBC moves ahead with its planned roll-out.
