Drinking milk products in Iran experienced a complicated year during 2014. Many of the key suppliers in the category were forced acquire their milk from dairy farmers and dairy cooperatives at much higher prices than in previous years, while many dairy processors and producers were also faced with higher costs for processing and packaging whilst remaining unable to increase unit prices to reflect these higher costs due to the imposition of strict government price controls on milk. The resultant low profit margins led to numerous small milk suppliers becoming bankrupt during 2014, a situation which helped the leading producers of the best-known milk brands in Iran to strengthen their positions due to their higher volume sales.

Competitive Landscape

Within this, the company has also engaged in highly visible advertising and promotional campaigns focusing on in-store promotional activities including stickers, branded display stands and posters, all of which has served to strengthen the company’s position in the minds of many Iranian consumers.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of milk are expected to decline in Iran during the forecast period due to surging unit prices. Although the efforts of Iranian health officials to inform the population of the country about the importance of calcium in their diet are expected to continue playing a key role in terms of improving consumer awareness of the importance of drinking high amounts of milk and bolster demand drinking milk products, the gradual removal of government price subsidies on fresh/pasteurised milk is expected to continue having a detrimental impact on demand for drinking milk product in Iran throughout the forecast period. Nevertheless, the rate of volume decline expected in milk in Iran over the forecast period is expected to be less severe than volume declines recorded in the category over the review period, mainly due to the fact that the general situation of the Iranian economy is expected to undergo major improvements during the forecast period after the chaotic situation which prevailed in Iran’s economy during 2012 and 2013. Overall, drinking milk products in Iran is expected to increase in value at a CAGR of 4% in current 2014 terms over the forecast period, a rate of growth which is set to be commensurate with the 4% value CAGR recorded in the category in constant 2014 terms over the entire review period.
