The category’s current value growth of 5% in 2014 was in line with the review period CAGR. Although many Dutch consumers still prefer prescription drugs to OTC medicines for digestive ailments, category sales continued to grow. Manufacturers tried to boost sales by improving consumer awareness about the use and possibilities of OTC medicines. In particular, Bayer Consumer Care BV (Rennie) and Reckitt Benckiser Nederland BV (Gaviscon) used television advertisements for this purpose.

Competitive Landscape

Reaching the top spot of digestive remedies in 2014 was Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health BV, overtaking Omega Pharma Nederland BV. Johnson & Johnson is best known for its brands Microlax, Diacure and Immodium. Microlax is a laxative while Diacure and Immodium are both diarrhoeal remedies based on the active ingredient loperamide. Meanwhile, Omega Pharma Nederland BV lost the leadership which it attained in 2012 (on the back of brand acquisitions) in 2014, with declining value share of its brands. Zantac is an H2 blocker and Nourilax a laxative. Zantac was the only brand available in H2 blockers in 2014, having been sold by GlaxoSmithKline B/V to Omega Pharma in 2012. The Nourilax brand was offered by Chefaro International BV, which merged with Omega Pharma in 2011.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period digestive remedies is expected to register a steady value CAGR of 3% at constant 2014 prices. The category’s performance will be driven by several factors. Firstly, the ageing of the Dutch population will support sales over the forecast period. Digestive problems are more common in older people, which will lead to the need for more frequent treatments. The unhealthy lifestyles of Dutch consumers could also boost sales in the future. Unhealthy lifestyles lead to more consumers reaching for quick and convenient meal solutions, such as ready meals. Unhealthy diets can lead to digestive problems such as diarrhoea, heartburn and constipation.
