New Market Research Report: Philippines Telecommunications Report Q4 2015

New Fixed Networks research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

[ClickPress, Tue Sep 01 2015] Relatively low smartphone penetration and increasing GDP per capita will give impetus for mobile market growth in the Philippines. BMI believes that 3G subscriptions will grow at an average rate of 4.2% over our forecast period from 2015 to 2019. A potential new entrant in the form of San Miguel Corp (SMC)'s Bell Telecommunications (BellTel) unit could drive competition in the currently duopolistic market. If its commercial launch is successful, incumbents Globe Telecom and Philippines Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) could have their market positions threatened. Despite this, BMI believes that the two established operators' strong brand names and product bundling will prevent any large lost in market share. Broadband growth is also set to grow with operators investing more in fibre networks, and the nationwide 'Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places' project to be implemented by the end of 2015.

Key Data:

We expect a total of 131.977mn mobile subscriptions by the end of our forecast period to 2019.

The number of fixed-line subscribers could be experiencing a sustained period of contraction due to mobile substitution. We forecast 2.112mn subscribers by 2019, representing a 1.9% penetration rate.

Despite the mobile market effectively being a duopoly, mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) continues to trend lower. Without a concerted effort to move towards higher revenue-generating products and subscribers, operator ARPU will continue to fall.
