Within cafés/bars, independent bars/pubs continued to dominate in 2014. However, the category’s growth started to show a decelerating trend at the end of the review period. Cafés and specialist coffee shops played an important role in contributing to value sales, transactions and outlet count thanks to the coffee-drinking culture becoming more widespread among Thai consumers. Specialist coffee shops which were widely found within Bangkok and large cities were increasingly present in other provinces as well. In 2014 the cafés/bars category was becoming more sophisticated. Some existing outlets were closed while the development of the category was attractive to others.
Competitive Landscape
Operators in the cafés/bars environment were numerous, most being independent players. Chained players had only a strong leading position in specialist coffee shops. Within the highly fragmented cafés/bars category Starbucks Coffee (Thailand) Ltd achieved a leading position with a marginal share of less than 2% in terms of foodservice value. PTT PCL, Black Canyon Thailand Co Ltd and True Life Retail Co Ltd and Coffee World Corp held the subsequent positions. Such players continued to enjoy strong brand loyalty and an established presence with a great number of outlets and a growing customer base.
