Growing use of smartphones and network upgrades were key elements behind the increase in retail sales of mobile phones in 2015. The country’s leading wireless providers - Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless and Telus – launched national 4G LTE networks in 2014-2015 which provided the infrastructure for service and feature enhancements and also triggered demand for upgraded phones as many older mobile phones in use were not compatible with the 4G network. Not all older mobile phones needed an upgrade as the non-4G compliant handsets in some cases were still able to receive a 3G signal.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung led sales in 2015, recording a volume share of 34%, and was followed by Apple (30%).The release of the iPhone 6 and the S6 both met with success in Canada, though the shift in share for operating systems underpins the gain by Samsung in mobile share. Android is gaining share in several consumer electronics categories such as tablets, laptops and mobile phones as consumers look to integrate their devices at the OS level.
