There was a surge in car sales in the United Arab Emirates during the review period, with the number of passenger cars in use in the country rising from 1.5 million in 2010 to 2.1 million in 2014. The household penetration of passenger cars meanwhile edged closer to 100%, rising by a percentage point during the review period to 98%. However, in-car navigation failed to benefit from these trends or from the fact that many consumers are entirely reliant on cars for personal transportation. This was mainly due to competition from alternatives to in-car navigation.
Competitive Landscape
Garmin is the dominant player in in-car navigation and continued to see a soaring share in 2015, gaining an impressive 12 percentage points over the previous year to account for 77% of retail volume. This was partly due to diminishing competition. By 2014, JVC's Kenwood, Panasonic and Al-Futtaim's m-drive brands had all notably exited as a result of declining demand, while retailers continued to pare back their range of in-car navigation at the end of the review period, focusing on the leading brands.

Industry Prospects
The future appears bleak for in-car entertainment. On the one hand, the quality and range of entertainment systems integrated into cars is expected to continue to expand. More consumers will thus have little need for additional in-car entertainment.
