New Study: Home Audio and Cinema in France

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Sun Jan 17 2016

In 2015, the average unit price of products within home audio and cinema rose by 3%. This was primarily due to imported inflation resulting from the depreciation of the euro compared with the US dollar. French households generally preferred to defer expenditure on such products, with the expectancy that prices will fall back and stabilise after 2015. With the exception of digital media player docks which saw both positive volume and value growth, all other subcategories saw volume decline by at least 1%; the latter category went through a lower price rise as a result of intense price competition among players and was also more appealing to customers seeking modern features of connectivity (via Bluetooth and/or streaming such as Airplay), versatility (cloud-based access, nomadic audio experience) and design. Within home cinema and speaker systems, the demand for sound bars remained dynamic, fetching double-digit growth, but it was insufficient to outpace the drop in demand for all other conventional audio systems.

Competitive Landscape

In the diverse home audio and cinema category, the top-three companies in 2015 were Sony France SA (with a 15% volume share), Philips France SAS (13%) and Bose Corp (11%). Whilst overall ranking remained stable, some emerging brands of US origin, namely Sonos (operated in France by Sonos France Sarl) and Bolse (Bolse Inc), are gaining ground. Operators of brands of French origin do not focus on volume, but rather focus on high-value home audio and cinema. Examples of such upmarket French companies are Cabasse, Elipson and Devialet.

Industry Prospects

The home audio and cinema category is set to grow at a volume CAGR of 1% over the forecast period, while value at constant 2015 prices is likely to decline at a CAGR of 2%. Despite a high penetration rate (69% of households in 2015), trade experts believe that innovative home audio and cinema products will help to drive renewals and/or stimulate consumer interest. For example, digital media player docks are expected to retain their "must-have" positioning amongst the "smartphone-and-tablet" generation of consumers, who enjoy a nomadic sound experience, for example from mobile to home, and multi-room. The hi-fi systems category, especially the modern variants that are more compact and provide wireless/multi-room convenience, is also likely to maintain positive volume growth over the forecast period.
