New market study, "In-Car Entertainment in France", has been published

In 2015, demand for in-car entertainment continued to suffer from three main factors: morose socioeconomic conditions that mean such products are the lowest priority among many householders, the growing use of relevant mobile applications especially for navigation purposes, and the qualitative improvement of in-car original equipment. The double-digit growth for in-car speakers in 2014, which was primarily driven by the drop in average unit price, could not be sustained in 2015 as prices rose again as the euro depreciated. The in-car entertainment category’s overall volume decline worsened to 8% in 2015, compared to a drop of 5% in 2014.

Competitive Landscape

TomTom International BV maintained its overall leadership of in-car entertainment in 2015, with a 19% retail volume share. This was mainly achieved through its performance in in-car navigation, where it held a 50% share. Ranked second and third overall with respective volume shares of 13% and 11%, Pioneer France SA and Sony France SA both generated most of their sales from in-car speakers and in-dash media players. Given the high maturity level of the category, as well as the trend towards consumer thriftiness, in-car entertainment remained on a downward trend, resulting in volume sales decline for most players.

Industry Prospects

Retail volume sales of in-car entertainment are set to decline at a CAGR of 5% over the forecast period. This will be due to two main factors. On the one hand, car manufacturers are increasingly placing emphasis on their original in-car entertainment devices in order to render their vehicle more appealing to purchasers – this also underlies a narrowing of the quality gap between OEM and aftermarket equipment. On the other hand, alternative devices – notably tablets and smartphones – will continue to negatively impact sales. Given the high degree of price-based competition in the category, value sales are set to fall at a stronger CAGR of 7%.
