The high exchange value of the Swiss Franc and rampant cross-border shopping continued to have a strong negative impact on the performance of mixed retailers in 2015. As prices are more attractive in neighbouring countries in the Eurozone, increasing numbers of Swiss consumers are crossing the border to do their shopping in department stores located outside of the country. Domestic department store chains, meanwhile, continue to focus on the upper end of the price spectrum through improved customer service and premium product ranges. Variety stores, on the other hand, continues to benefit from shoppers seeking to buy products at lower prices.

Maus Frères’ Manor remained the clear leader in mixed retailers in 2015. Present in all major cities of Switzerland, the retailer has a mid-priced positioning and enjoys high levels of consumer trust thanks to its broad range of private label products in apparel and footwear, sports goods, packaged food and fresh food. Coop, with its Coop City fascia, ranked second and Migros followed in third place with its Globus fascia. Both of these operators continue to benefit from their privileged position as Switzerland’s largest retailers and their financial power.
Industry Prospects
Mixed retailers is expected to continue declining in value over the forecast period. On the one hand, the performance of department stores is set to be subject to a number of external factors such as the particular unfavourable economic situation in Europe generally and the high exchange value of the Swiss currency, high levels of price competition and the seemingly relentless expansion of shopping centres in the country. On the other hand, due to the low price positioning of the category, variety stores is expected to be less negatively impacted by the adverse economic situation and the category is expected to post positive value growth at constant 2015 prices over the forecast period.
