During nine months of 2014 a freeze on prices of OTC medication was in place. However, the price freeze was not absolute as adjustment for inflation was allowed. Moreover, during the entire year price regulation on prescription medication was also in place. The National Council on Pricing and Reimbursement of Medication Products (set up in mid-2013) actively reviewed and reduced prices of medications. In the first six months of the year, the government agency reduced the pricing of some 700 prescription products.

Competitive Landscape

Apteki Mareshki, operated by Varnapharma, retained the lead in 2015, achieving sales of BGN583 million, up by 18%. As a result, its share increased by over two percentage points in 2015 over the previous year to reach 22%. The performance of the brand reflects the recent addition of 48 new stores to the chain.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, sales are set to rise by a CAGR of only 1% in value terms at constant 2015 prices, down slightly on the review period. Negative projections assume a very modest economic growth over the forecast period and a continued low employment level will damage consumer purchasing power. In addition, tight price regulation on medications is expected to remain in place and further dampen growth potential.
