New market study, "Sportswear in Mexico", has been published

It can be evident that the highly educated population in Mexico are more concerned about changing their habits to achieve a healthier lifestyle. They are willing to practise any sport in order to be healthier as they become older. On one hand there are regular people who start running or swimming, or those who enrol in a gym. On the other hand there are niche segments of younger people, between 15 and 20 years old, who are defining their personality and seeking to belong to a group that makes them feel good and where they can develop some skills. Some of these people are skaters, surfers, cyclists and MMA fighters, among others. Despite football being the most popular sport, the diversity of sports and activities that can be practised across the country is pretty wide, from horse riding to water polo, sailing and golf, although sports that require snow are not possible. This increase in people practising sports led sportswear sales to rise by 8% in retail current value terms and reach Mx$74.1 billion in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

Adidas de Mexico SA de CV and Nike México SA de CV collectively accounted for a 15% retail value share in 2015. Both companies are by far the most aggressive in terms of marketing campaigns and the development of new products for men, women and children. Due to their long-standing presence in the market, Mexican consumers are especially loyal to them. However, during 2015 Converse Inc and Puma SA de CV were other sportswear players that created a positive impact among consumers, who witnessed a noticeable increase of outdoor advertisement and the launch of new products.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, sportswear is predicted to achieve a value CAGR of 6% at constant 2015 prices and reach Mx$96.7 billion in 2020. It is expected that the number of people who practise some sports activity regularly will continue to rise, either via some of the newly arrived gym chains or via outdoor activities such as running, skating or riding a bicycle. The government will continue opening places where people can exercise for free in an effort to reduce overweight and obesity problems among the Mexican population.
