New Study: Slovenia Tourism Report 2016

Slovenia's tourism sector is expected to expand throughout our forecast period, supported by increasing arrivals and growing receipts. This will support the value of the hotel and restaurant industry, creating room for expansion. Strong campaigns by the government and the country's tourism board continue to promote Slovenia to regional source markets and those further afield. A strong emphasis on 'green' and sustainable tourism is expected to boost the country's recognisability.

Over 2016 we expect a steady uptick in arrivals, supported by the government's and tourism board's continuous efforts to promote the country to the region. This trend is further boosted by Slovenia's eurozone membership, which facilitates the ease of tourist entry and exit within the region. Developments in airport capacity and facilities over the long term, as well as increased airline connections ( Adria Airways was acquired by German fund 4K KNDNS in early 2016) to new destinations support the expectation of increased arrivals in the years to come. Although there are a large number of domestic hotels in the country, rising demand from growing international tourists as well as higher projected domestic demand render the country an attractive investment location for the accommodation sector. At present, international footprints remain limited, but there is strong interest and a good project pipeline as new players look to enter Slovenia's hotel sector.

Key Updates And Forecasts

We forecast total arrivals to reach 2.6mn in 2016. This is supported by the recent efforts by the Slovenian Tourist Board's 'Green' campaign, which is aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and active holidays. In March 2016 Slovenia was awarded the Best Emerging Destination Award at the ITB Berlin, and Ljubljana was named the European Green Capital of 2016 by the European Commission. These awards are a strong factor in boosting the country's recognition and attracting visitors.

We believe Europe will account for more than 2.1mn of total arrivals in 2016 and continue to be the main source market through the forecast period. This is supported by expectations for increasing disposable income in European states over the medium term.

Total outbound departures will reach 6.1mn in 2016. The majority of these (some 6mn) will stay in Europe due to ease of travelling and a common currency.

Slovenia is expected to experience an upswing of tourism receipts in 2016 in US dollar terms, particularly compared with 2015, which saw a 10.1% drop, mostly due to euro weakness. 2016 will see receipts grow by 1.0% as the European economy gets back on track.
