Screenwriter Blames Voodoo for Misfortunes in Hollywood in New Web Series

Published: Mon Jul 23 2018

A superstitious screenwriter from Chicago hits a wall after his tyrannical boss derails his Hollywood dreams in JU-ju, a new web series created by actor and producer Jason Mimms and Visual Effects Executive Producer Lauren F. Ellis. The creative duo launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to tell a story that inspires people to pursue their dreams while finding humor in unfortunate circumstances.

The campaign seeks to raise $60K to complete the filming and production before the series premieres this fall. JU-ju tells the story of a man who blames his career misfortunes on a childhood encounter with a voodoo priestess and rediscovers his past for answers. Mimms and Ellis combine their knowledge of the entertainment industry and their personal experiences to breathe life into this timeless tale of chasing success. "I want people to face their own demons like comedy has done for me," says Mimms, who moved to Los Angeles from the South Side of Chicago in 2011.

He is best known in film and television for his performances in Laff Tracks, Boy Bye, Almost Nowhere and Hell Date. Mimms debuts his writing and directing as Showrunner of JU-ju.

JU-ju is the first episodic project from Finding Freddie Media, founded by Lauren F. Ellis from Alexandria, Virginia. "I’m telling this story because it’s a hilariously humbling take on the realities of what chasing a dream looks like." Ellis earned her master’s of fine arts from the Academy of Art University and her bachelor’s in print journalism from Hampton University. She has been credited in a number of hit television shows including Queen Sugar, The Affair, Shooter, Ballers and movie Fruitvale Station.
